No issue is an island unto itself. Racism is affected by inferior education, poor housing, and inferior health care. They are interrelated. To address such multi-faceted issues we must have a multi-facted approach. We're pulling our resources together, our ideas and intellects together, our presence together, our networks together, and our organizations together in order to address this issue.

Next Tuesday July 8th, Transform America and its Wings will decide upon our Destination, or our campaign for the upcoming year. Should we address education, housing, immigration, gun violence, or some other pressing problem?

Weigh in, what do you think and why?

Brainstorming

I've been brainstorming about a few objectives that Transform America could decide to take on. Read them through and let us know your ideas. We'll come together on the 8th to make a final decision.

Full Example:

Create an after-school class focussed on teaching and enhancing critical thinking. Develop a curriculum and implement for all Harlem public schools.
Time frame: 2 years
Necessary steps:

  • Determine objectives
  • Collect readings
  • Create assignments
  • Test with tutoring groups
  • Recruit teachers
  • Lobby school district
  • Fundraise
  • Implement
Skills necessary:

  • Teaching
  • Tutoring
  • Marketing
  • School district contacts
  • Fundraising

Other Ideas for Education:

  • Reduce the high school drop out by 50%
  • Reduce truancy by 50%
  • Establish funding trust for a public school, where the interest pays for school supplies
  • Create better school-evaluation system
  • Develop a Flight School curriculum for 5 topics
  • Begin 2 more Flight School locations

Ideas for Empowering Communities:

  • Create a get-out-the-vote initiative
  • Increase participation in community boards
  • Increase availability and enrollment in personal finance classes
  • Promote local businesses through marketing campaigns
  • Promote cultural awareness seminars
  • Increase access to legal advice centers
  • Increase access to English as a Second Language classes

Ideas for the Environment:

  • Increase effectiveness of NYC recycling programs
  • Increase availability of electronics recycling
  • Lobby businesses to use less packaging
  • Lobby local businesses to use recyclable and bio-degradeable take-out containers

These are just a few ideas to think about. We also should address issues of health care access, immigrants rights, gay rights, elderly rights, etc.
