Latinos Unidos Con Honor & Amistad

LUCHA

Mission Statement

We as L.U.C.H.A, an organization for social, political, and cultural education, must struggle to bring about the necessary changes within NYU as well as our respective communities. Any further procrastination on our part will only leave our voices (once living, loud and open to the future) to become fixed, closed on colonial status caught in the yoke of oppression. Our primary goal as an organization is to engage our thoughts, challenge conceptions and provoke new ideas for a better tomorrow.

Current Activities

Every other week, LUCHA executive board members prepare and facilitate a meeting on issues impacting Latinos. Our topics are controversial, relevant and interesting. We help create a much needed sense of community at NYU. Some of our topics have been Affirmative Action, Gender Roles, and Cultural Identity Issues. Our goal is to educate each other and increase the level of activism at NYU and in our respective communities.

Cultural Gala: In 1992, LUCHA member, Carlos Oyola, was killed in a car accident near Washington Square Park. His death is commemorated in our annual Cultural Gala held in the spring. In this event, three Latin American countries are also highlighted. Each country's food, typical performances, and brief facts are provided. The proceeds go towards the Carlos Oyola Scholarship, awarded to a promising Latino Student.

Alliance Conference: LUCHA will participate and present at the upcoming Alliance Conference focussed on education.

Salsa/Merengue Night: An event where L.U.C.H.A. and La Herencia Latina at NYU collaborate to offer a Salsa/Merengue concert in November. Some artists that have performed in the past have been: George Lamond, Brenda K. Starr, Oro Duro, and La Banda Gorda. Three years ago Huey Dunbar headlined the concert. All proceeds are given to a different charity each year.
